The Critical Importance of HIGH VALUE Clients & How it Can Make the Difference!

It's great finding high value clients where there is a mutal win win!

It’s great finding high value clients where there is a mutual win win! (Thank you to Fallout for the use of Vault Boy!)

I just had a very good phone discussion with a confidential colleague (who I have a lot of respect for that shall remain nameless) and we spoke about her new Corporate Business Development Role.

We shall call her * Alice * for this article and she has taken on a role with a top Financial Institution.

Over the phone on hands free – we had a great conversation and one big realization she had and a key discussion point is not that she needs “Clients” – she needs “High Value Clients”. Put in direct terms, one large client can create the revenue of 30 x little clients and her opportunity is to focus on the “Right” people to get as clients.

Even though my business model is quite different (as I have my Awesome Marketing Vault for anyone and love working with entrepreneurs) – for many of my clients (especially in the Financial Game) success is having a client book with Awesome Clients who love the Premium / Quality work they do.

Getting this concept alone right has turned around many of my clients businesses in that you want to be really clear on your “Ideal Target Market” and you make sure you are fishing in the right pond for them.

Quite often, you get people that say are targeting high net worth individuals – but then they are spending time in areas / events where these people don’t exist. From a Sales viewpoint, if you are say targeting Businesses of 5 and above staff or the like – you need to have access and a means of meeting these people.

This may be through Business Chamber Meetings, Referrals from your colleagues (like you can meet at 4Networking) or even so using LinkedIn or the like to identify who they are.

My advice and thinking? Like for my friend * Alice * make sure your Sales & Marketing thinking targets your ideal market with ideal products & services. Selling is a good win / win – so when you give the right tech, to the right people everyone is happy.

Love your work, thank you for the read and enjoy your high value clients wonderful people!

“Be Quick or Be Dead” – Pick up Clients Fast, or Not at All!

Be Quick or Be Dead! Life can move fast in a big city and if you don't pick up clients fast, you may not pick them up at all!

Be Quick or Be Dead! Life can move fast in a big city and if you don’t pick up clients fast, you may not pick them up at all!

If you are from Sydney or a big city like myself, you can probably relate to this heading I have here. I have found this to be very true as a consultant working the streets of Sydney.

Be it Mid-Tier, Entrepreneur Clients or whatever the case may be – picking up new clients / clients finishing up can be as quick or as instantly as an email. One big thing I have learned very much over the past 6 months is that in short:

Be Quick or Be Dead!

That is, when someone is ready to hire what you do – they are usually ready to go in an instant! If you aren’t available to meet with them, pick up the work or get started – you can very much lose that potential client if they meet someone else and are ready to get started.  Also as well, they can “Cool Down” on their drive to purchase your type of service at all.

For me personally I have had phone calls at say 5:30PM that night from people with Marketing / Sales issues that need it fixed now. In one case, I was able to meet them at 8AM in the morning, solve their problems and have a new client by 10AM.

It’s funny how people work (me included).  They can spend months deciding to say hire someone that does what you do.  The moment they do:

They want it right now!

This makes complete sense to me in that once you have thought something through (be it that it takes weeks or months) you may just be purely ready to go. When you are ready to go – why wait? You want a trustworthy supplier that is ready to pick you up right away so you can get started.

My tips, advice and insights? This is a very short blog with a very simple message that I have learned and made thousands:

Be there in an instant ready to solve their problems, sign them up and have a great time.

Pure & Simple! Be fast, be cool, be the trusted one and pick up clients.

Thank you for reading the shortest blog I have read ever – it’s short potent point and love your work!

Giving Free Stuff Away & Why It’s Awesome Marketing!

It's always important to be the one that gives first. For me, no way my business would be as big (assuming I am still around) if I wasn't go generous. Like this Bear & Gift Card I gave away at an event, people love generous people!

It’s always important to be the one that gives first. For me, no way my business would be as big (assuming I am still around) if I wasn’t go generous. Like this Bear & Gift Card I gave away at an event, people love generous people!

After I really messed my life up and lost the farm when I was 29 – 30, as I worked hard to rebuild / restart my life I was very aware of the “Old Thinking” that led to my original death.

Even though I have always been a generous guy of some form, I kind of started to realize that as I come back into my new life – that I really want to achieve success the right way.  That is, not through slick sales pitches, manipulation or anything like that – but through being the one who genuinely is trustworthy that gives away more.

When I was in a crappy job, I started thinking about my business and what it has become today. I would sit there almost forever pondering what I would do, how I would do it and in particular what my different / edge will be.

As this unravelled, I found that almost everyone in my industry (except for a few which I have lots of respect for) don’t give anything away. They may pretend they do – but they are always poorly disguised “Sales Funnels” designed to somehow hood-wink someone into buying their overpriced crappy services.

This I never liked and do this day I have never followed and I my research showed very early on this:

Almost no-one gives away quality information. Why don’t I be one of the first?

I started being very generous in my approach and sharing my Marketing & Business Knowledge with anyone that was willing to listen. At the start, I was more treated as some “Crackpot” with funny ideas and I had to really fight to get my points heard.

Even at the time I had my so called “Friends” laughing at me, telling me how wrong I am, how stupid I am and that I am giving away too much. I ignored those losers who were just greedy (they never succeeded in their businesses) and thank god I did – it was this thinking that led to my success today.

As time passed and my reputation grew – I became a “Proven Trusted Figure” and now my blog is followed by thousands to this day (and thank you for reading this).

This isn’t because of my ego, or I am “Cool” or anything lame like that – it’s simply because of my drive to give away as much as I commercially can to help people in their Businesses & Life.

Over time as I “Proved” I was right through results, I found that in very simple terms it all came down to this:

As I was giving so much away, I could prove to people over time I knew what I was doing. Hence they would end up hiring me!

In all situations and businesses it may be hard to give stuff away – however, when it comes to tips, knowledge, ideas & thinking (especially in Service Businesses such as Consulting, Coaching, Mentoring & the like) it can be very powerful.

My advice and thinking? Be always the one to give first.  You will become a loved character and can do very well.

Thank you for the read & love your work!

7 x Tips for Working Out your Most Profitable & High Value Clients!

I have been very lucky to have some awesome like-minded clients & colleagues over the years. Awesome Martha is one of them - nothing better than having clients who are at least as cool as you are!

I have been very lucky to have some awesome like-minded clients & colleagues over the years. Awesome Martha is one of them – nothing better than having clients who are at least as cool as you are!

A massive challenge I have helped hundreds personally overcome is working out / clearly defining ones most high value profitable clients. I often get approached by people asking something like “Edward, how do I get more Clients ASAP?”

My response is that it isn’t so much about getting more clients, it’s always getting the “Right, High Value and Profitable Clients” in a Win / Win manner.

After all, none of us want to be working hard whilst barely being able to make a living or even worse – spending hours on a client that lies, cheats & steals to get out of paying your invoices. Although it may sound like I am being a bit harsh here – it’s totally true. Almost any business owner I know has many stories of people ripping them off on their products or services.

If you are not 100% on who your ideal client is, I trust these tips help you get some clarity here and helping you focus your Marketing & Sales efforts:

1) Look at your best clients already: You may be able to answer this question already by looking at your current clients. Who are the ones that love you, are a pleasure, value your work and you look forward to selling to them / working with them? My best ones for example have full integrity as do I, are kind, believe in hard work and appreciate success takes time.

2) Look at the bad / shonky clients you have had: One of my awesome clients / colleagues once told me that “In business the sharks never go away – you just get better in spotting them”. Your worst clients probably have common traits. I have learned over time that my bad ones are those that are lazy, back-stabbers and don’t like taking responsibility.

3) Think about the type of person that loves your services: It’s great to think through from a client’s viewpoint the nature of your products & services so you “Get” how they are used. If for example you are a high end Business Consultant – you may realize your skills aren’t that valuable to a single person operator, but if someone manages say 10 x staff your ideas are perfect. It may guide you to target these characters!

4) Think about key parameters / demographics: Female 30 to 55+, Businesses of at least 5 staff, people within 15km of Parramatta / Your City – try and put some guidelines in to help you really focus on them.

5) Don’t feel like you have to target everyone: It can be a bit of a mistake thinking you have to “Target Everyone”. For example, I work great with Service Industries, Salons, Consultants and the like – but poorly with Tradesmen & Real Estate Agents. As I know that, I can stay away from what doesn’t click and focus on what clicks.

6) Think about what you like: Don’t just work with whoever – you want to work with people you love so it’s a true win / win. For example, I am not a massive fan of Corporates but I love Mid-Tier and Entrepreneurs – so I target them.

7) Aim at people you know have money and like paying you! Goes without saying, target people with money that will gladly give it to you for the awesome services you provide.

Once you have this all figured out, the next step is to align your Sales & Marketing in the right direction. You need to make sure you are “Fishing in the right pond” after all!

Love your work, thank you for the read and of course drop me a line if you need a hand!

“Is your weight loss emotional?” – Guest Blog by Firecracker Luke Hawkins!

Luke Hawkins the NLP Man and Firecracker. He has made some points that have impressed me lately and I trust you enjoy his blog right here on ‘The Edward Files’ !!

Last year some time I was very lucky to be referred to a “Good looking Young Guy” through a client. This guy was full of beans and we further got to know each other through the 4Networking Business Community.

I watched him in a few networking meetings, spent time with him over lunches & breakfasts, got to know each other over Facebook – and I have been quite impressed at his eager freshness to hit the market hard as a new entrepreneur.

Luke Hawkins is his name and as we spoke, he said a few things that really got my attention when it comes to dealing with issues of the mind.

I then just had to invite him to Guest Blog on “The Edward Files” and he came up with this great article looking at weight loss and emotions. I trust you enjoy and thank you Luke!

“Is your weight loss emotional?” – Guest Blog by Luke Hawkins:

When it comes to weight loss, we have been sold time and time again that the latest diet, pill or ’30 day cleanse’ or ’30 day exercise challenge’ is the answer. Why is it that so many of these quick fixes simply do not work? For instance, we know that 83% of the people who go on diets regain any weight they lose plus more within as little as 2 years. Yet it is reported that up to 50% of women are on a diet at any given time. So what is it that causes someone to lose weight and keep it off forever as opposed to someone who does the latest diet, fitness challenge or cleanse only to put it all back on? The answer comes in three words YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM!

Every decision the brain makes is based on emotion. It does not matter what pill you take or what diet you go on, if you do not associate pleasure to the behaviours that would cause you to achieve your ideal body and pain to those behaviours that cause you to gain weight, then you are fighting against the current that is much stronger than you… your nervous system! The only way to make any permanent change in your behaviours is to do so in your unconscious mind where all learning and behavior change is unconscious. Why? Because 90% of our behaviours are controlled by the unconscious mind, and only 10% by our conscious mind.

When someone is having trouble losing weight it’s not the weight that is the problem, it is their unconscious mind which perceives that by you holding onto the weight it is actually providing you some positive benefit. You may think….what!! I don’t see any benefit to holding onto this weight. It is important to know that one of the most important roles of the unconscious mind is to preserve the body and keep you safe. If you have tried losing the weight and you still haven’t succeeded then you can be sure that out of need to avoid pain and gain pleasure you have decided on some level to hold onto that extra weight due to the positive benefit it is providing you. It is meeting one of your needs and being overweight actually represents a need for protection. Your weight is actually a resource as means of protecting yourself.

There are a variety of possible self protection scenarios. One example is that by holding onto the weight you are creating a barrier of separation between yourself and what you fear. That could be rejection from a potential partner again due to the pain associated with a past relationship breakup, or the fear that if you lost the weight you might attract too much attention and that would place you in a position where you wouldn’t be able to trust yourself or trust the people that you put yourself around (this can stem from childhood).

Other deeper reasons could be if someone was sexually abused they can create this barrier of separation to limit the chances of them being sexually abused again by holding onto the weight. Another reason could be if you are in a relationship and you are not happy you know by holding onto the weight you are able to punish your partner and can create a barrier of separation between the both of you. The bottom line is we all can seek protection from our fears, hurts, past pain, criticism, the unknown and judgment. When people feel insecure and not at ease, kilos will add on. When the threat is gone, the excess weight goes away by itself. Fighting fat is a waste of time and energy. Diets do not work. The minute you stop the diet, the weight goes back up. Loving and approving of yourself, trusting in the process of life and feeling safe because you know the power of your own mind make up the best diet. Go on a diet from negative thoughts, and the weight will take care of itself.

The most effective tools for change that I use for having people lose weight and keep it off forever is through the power of Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming. These tools allow somebody to change the behaviours that they link pleasure and pain to in their nervous system at the unconscious level, which is where all permanent behavior change occurs. My clients have lost a minimum of 5 kilos using these techniques in as little as one session. If you would like to shed those kilos forever then get in contact with us at Luke Hawkins Coaching Today!

Edward’s Post Blog Commentary:

Even though my weight is under control and I work out 3 – 4 times a week now, for years I struggled with my weight for a long time. Like many I am sure, I was an “Emotional Eater” which did me no good. I would work long hours and then turn to “Food” to help me, only sacrificing my future with every bite.

Luke makes a good point, don’t fight your nervous system – change it so it happens on autopilot. Like what you are reading? Give Luke a Call and love your work.  Thank you for the read!

Community Vs Competition & My Love for Success Women’s Network!

Success Women's Network is a wonderful community of great women helping each other. As a Persian Man I love hanging out there! x x

Success Women’s Network is a wonderful community of great women helping each other. As a Persian Man I love hanging out there! x x

I was incredibly honoured today to speak to a room of very beautiful women at Success Women’s Network Hills (Sydney).  Under the leadership of my awesome friend Natalie Moutia – she some years ago created a very powerful Business Networking Concept just for women.

It is very culturally alike 4Networking (except obviously more women and a different structure) and it’s a very fun, light, dynamic and caring type of environment – WHERE PEOPLE MAKE MONEY!

When I started out in business networking, I was originally invited into another business networking concept which wasn’t my thing at all. It was all about referrals, turning up, no-one cared whether I lived or died – as long as I bring in business. In that environment, it was all about “Proving” you were better than everyone else and you are forever watching your seat – in case the leadership team decide to kick you out one day for whatever reason.

This really damaged my confidence and self-esteem – with the group only folding a few months after they brought me in.  I couldn’t express this at the time, but this group was not “Community” based at all.  It wasn’t about helping your friends and working as a team – it was about performing by yourself and that was it. It was completely “Competition” based and it was a destructive and painful environment to trade in.

4Networking came along and this was the start of many great changes. It was “Community” focused which is all about everyone doing the best to help each other.  Shining the spotlight on Success Women’s Network of course which I consider quite similar in many ways, it’s a great team based environment which I love for these reasons:

1) Fun & Friendly: You can have a great time and enjoy yourself!

2) Profitable: I have picked up clients there and I am not even a member. Proof right there!

3) Well Attended: The Groups have a great vibe and great people with strong turnouts of people that truly want to be there.

4) Power of the Group: The Girls all support each other and if someone messes up, it’s not “You Suck” it’s “How Can I help?”

5) Extremely well run: Groups are well run with a strong / light structure to allow maximum impact with as little rules as possible.

6) Great Venues: Pretty places!

7) Beautiful women: As a Persian Man, I need to be surrounded by beautiful women at all times.

My thinking and advice? Success Women’s Network is a great environment and if you are like female – it’s a perfect place to join to grow your business, make friends, develop personally and open your mind to new things.

Turing Insecurity into “Complete Self-Worth” & Epiphany’s from the Awesome Belinda Verne!

The Awesome, Intelligent and Sharp Belinda Verne. She got into my head and solved some big problems. Good on her and big things from her to come!

The Awesome, Intelligent and Sharp Belinda Verne. She got into my head and solved some big problems. Good on her and big things from her to come!

This rarely happens to me when people get into my head, solve my massive mindset issues and help me get epiphany’s like I got today. Belinda Verne is this very intelligent, sharp and perceptive almost “Clarice Starling” (Jodie Foster from Silence of the Lambs) type of character who I have utmost respect for.

She has been my Chiropractor for a long time and I she has spent a great deal of her time with Personal Development & also studying courses on the mind. Belinda blew me away today with some thinking / advice around my own issues of Self-Worth, dealing with being forced single again as well as getting over my needs for external validation from others.

Since I have been single for about a month, I have had a great deal of insecurity and fears really come to the surface. Ironically for me, my business is totally rocking right now – and in terms of “Relationships & Girls” this has been a challenge for me.

As Belinda was stretching me, poking my body, tapping parts of it, doing tests and helping with my structure / posture – her sharp witted intense conversation was basically doing the same thing to my brain. I told her straight out what happened to me with being single all of a sudden – and she was getting to the heart of my issues quite quickly.

In short, this is what I felt and her powerhouse response that made me feel instantly better, lifted and gave me a sense of relief:

Edward’s Feelings / Issues:

– I was feeling lonely, very anxious about finding the “Right Woman” and starting a family, concerned about what happened / went wrong in my last relationship and worried about my future relationship – I have been engaged twice in my life now and both ended badly.  Lots of insecurity and doubt!

Belinda’s Powerhouse “Excuse Cutting” Response:

– Belinda was very quick to identify that my problems was that “I was not complete” outside of a relationship. I never realized this and she explained to me that my pain came from that feeling under the surface.  I need to “Feel Complete” by myself – and that is how I speak to myself internally in that moment. Get that right – and then the right lady shall come.

My Feelings & Response:

This was an instant sigh of relief to see the error in my thinking.  Even though on the logical surface I didn’t think that, on an “Emotional Level” I had some really poor thinking in this regard. Belinda’s thinking really hit the spot in that regard and I strangely feel a massive load off my shoulders. For me, the cure is really in the moment. I need to “Feel Complete” completely by myself and not be dependent on anything outside / anyone for this feeling.  By being strong in this regard and “Internally Driven” it shall make me incredibly more effective in business & life!

My response and learnings today? It’s great to have Coaches, Mentors, Psychologists and the like supporting you especially at big times of change in your life. For me, I wasn’t conscious to this limitation in my own thinking and Belinda totally nailed it.

Love her work and stay tuned! This lovely friend of mine has more great things to come………

When People Unfriend You on Facebook & Why it’s Silly to Even Care!

Would you unfriend this awesome man? Well some have and in most cases I bet it's tall poppy. It's good to not even pay them a single thought and move on in style!

Would you unfriend this awesome man? Well some have and in most cases I bet it’s tall poppy. It’s good to not even pay them a single thought and it’s great to move on in style!

I am sure it’s happened to many of you awesome people reading this article. You probably have been “Unfriended” on Facebook at some point.

It can certainly “Shock” ones emotions and bring up a lot of insecurities in oneself. I have had some great people Unfriend me on Facebook lately. I have had people who disagree with me on politics unfriend me, someone I told off for spamming unfriend me, ex-partner’s who I thought we were cool with unfriend me, an old friend who I gave thousands of dollars of business too unfriend me and many more!

It does make me question myself when someone unfriends me – and certainly, when I see that person again “in the real world” I take a very suspicious view of them. I know in some cases (one old friend), was in tears over being unfriended on Facebook.  She was dealing with cancer at the time, put up some posts of her with no hair – and stack of “Friends” unfriended he (just purely horrible behaviour of course!).

What I find very illogical about this whole process is why we even care. Quite honestly, some people I considered myself close too once unfriending me was a bit distressful and here is the reality:

Caring about it is really silly!

The reality is that let’s say we have 1000 friends on Facebook, 100 really really like us – who cares if 1 or 2 unfriends us and hates us? I think although it does emotionally play on us, it’s really pointless in worrying about it in that:

1) It’s only 1 person: So what one person hates you and wants you dead? The point is that you will have 999 more friends.

2) Do you want to be friends with someone like that? If someone unfriends you, screw them! They can go to hell and we don’t want them.

3) It probably makes them look silly: I have made the mistake of “Unfriending” people before and it can make you look like the “Silly” one.  So don’t – let them look like that bad people.

4) If everyone likes you, you are doing something wrong: Even Mother Theresa had people that hated her.  So should you!

5) Tall Poppy is at work: You get unfriended way more as you succeed!

6) You know they hate you: It’s a bit silly, they have made is public that they hate you.  Not very intelligent especially in the business space.

7) Move on and focus on the right people!

I did quite a bit of research on this topic and started really asking myself why “Unfriending” can be so mentally painful. It can bring up childhood isolation / friendless type of issues. The reality is that in the modern world, as we get more successful a lot of people will just start to hate us.

That is awesome! The more fans and critics we have the better we are.

My advice? Even if it’s someone who you really cared for once and was close too – don’t be phased if they unfriend you. It’s more than likely their problem and if anything they are just showing the world their true colours.

Love your work, don’t let it bug you and keep up the fine work awesome wonderful people!

Thank you from Edward Zia!

7 x Tips for Recovering from Mini-Meltdowns, Stress Attacks and Purely Freaking Out!

I did it! I thought about too much at once today and freaked myself out. It happens to the best of us at times and it's great to snap out of it quickly and work our way to a great awesome day!

I did it! I thought about too much at once today and freaked myself out. It happens to the best of us at times and it’s great to snap out of it quickly and work our way to a great awesome day!

Awesome People! You got me! I won’t sit here and lie to you and make out I am totally invincible and all that (as if I ever have?). I am extremely human and many people often ask me “Edward! How on Earth do you stay so positive all the time?”

The truth is that I don’t (although I try my best too) and even though I put on my whole “Ex-Government Agent” act, I can get really freaked out and scared even at the best of times.

For me right now there is a lot of positive change and upheaval in my life.  I have had a business grow, working through picking up a property now, had a fiance & a potential new family move me on, made some fantastic new friends and even started working on new initiatives in my business & life.

I woke up with a lot on my mind, didn’t sleep a lot (with a webinar last night) and I had to group lead the Awesome 4Networking Chatswood. An awesome new friend who I have connected with and we are speaking a lot (you know who you are, shall remain nameless but know I think you are wonderful) has witnessed some of my high’s & low’s lately and been very kind and supportive.

Right before 4Networking Chatswood, I actually got really nervous and started freaking out. Totally nervous. As an accomplished public speaker this just doesn’t happen to me at all and I was totally out of the zone. I pulled myself together, led the group and for the rest of the day I had nothing but amazing / awesome clients and people to meet.

The stress / fatigue / to so many changes in my life, basically gave me a mini “Panic Attack” this morning and I was so scared and uncertain. Right now, I am a bit flat / very tired, but I feel good and well directed now (and shall be back to 100% tomorrow).

This experience made me reflect on the reality – there are times where things can get too much and we just freak out.

The good news is that I am quite used to freaking out and here are my “Top 7 Anti-Freakout Tips”

1) Accept you are freaking out: I realized quickly I was just panicking and my brain wasn’t working correctly.  This gave me perspective.

2) Focus on the moment / the job: I had to run a group of 20+ people and I had to pull myself together. I forgot all about my stresses and did it!

3) Don’t get into your emotions too much: At least in the heat of battle!

4) Control Body Language: I was fidgeting a bit attracting unwanted attention, I controlled that – and then started to fit in.  It also makes you feel better.

5) Focus on all being okay! I kept telling myself that and it helped.

6) Believe in God & a Divine Purpose: It does help.  Trust me on this one.

7) Know it’s short term! It doesn’t last forever.

So there you go! It can be overwhelming and it’s just great to remember it all passes when we stay focused.

Love your work, thank you for the read and enjoy your night / day.

P.S. Thank you to my “Awesome Friend” – you know who you are!

– The only way I will stand out, is by giving better quality information than everyone else.

As these ideas became apparent (and looking at the top successful internet people), “Blogging” became the technique of choice.  I started blogging and within 2 weeks, I got my first client from it. Obviously I knew I was on a winner today and many hire me to teach them top blogging strategies.

Today I am very blessed to have my blog followed by thousands every month, it has earned me countless new clients & speaking opportunities and there are so many people that know me – and I don’t know them! Several times a week, I will meet people for the first time that recognize me from my blog.

I have taught these strategies to many clients who have loved it – and I want to share it all with you on the house from our Webinar!

The Anytime Fitness Trainer that Inspired Me with her Bravery….

The extremely brave Personal Trainer Elisa Wilson who totally earned my respect. Moving to Sydney to start a new life. Impressive!

The extremely brave Personal Trainer Elisa Wilson who totally earned my respect. Moving to Sydney to start a new life. Impressive!

In doing my mere best to be a “Fit Persian Man” I have to attend the gym at least 3 x times per week. I was there yesterday (Saturday at the time I write this blog) and if you have read any of my previous posts you have no doubt seen the love I show for Anytime Fitness.  It’s a great concept full of nice people and it’s a break not having to go to that other “Silly Gym” which is full of pretension and you have to live your life by their clock.

As I was on the Cross-Training Machine yesterday a very pleasant (& extremely fit) blonde Personal Trainer approached me. She couldn’t have weighed more than 45 kilos, probably came up to my shoulders – but she is way braver than I was when I was her age.

I was drinking a Long Black Coffee while on the machine – and she said hello, laughed at me about it and while I was working out away we started talking. I could tell immediately from her accent she was not a Sydney Sider (I was picking up Regional Victoria) and before long she revealed she is from Adelaide originally.

It was about a 15 minute conversation as I started learning her story and exchanging mine – I told her what I did and she started asking some very intelligent questions about how to get public speaking gigs and the like.  As we conversed – I got permission to write this blog and got her story – she left Adelaide, worked in Canberra for a while and 5 weeks earlier had come to Sydney ON HER OWN to start a new life.

No job, little contacts and nothing – she just came to Sydney to start her brand new life.  I remember doing the same thing when I was 28 and good on her! Elisa Wilson is her name and she totally inspired me with her bravery. Yes, she was probably 5″6 – 45kg, but she has more muscle & strength than me and boy I was impressed.

In reflecting on her story, me recently being made single & moving house, as well my friends who have been through similar – life at times change because something happens to us or we make it. In telling my own story, my life fell into a total heap when I was in Hobart at the age of 28 – and my answer was to move interstate and start my life again. The first few months was extremely hard and traumatic – but as life unravelled and I got more “Business Savvy” life totally rocked and made sense.

Upon thinking more about Awesome Elise’s story – it reminded me of these pertinent truths:

– Change is inevitable & don’t fight it.

– The past is gone & move on (a big lesson for me in recently having a fiance and step child move on.  They are gone & good luck to them – time for me to move on in my own mind).

– If your life isn’t working – do something radical & change it!

– Strength isn’t quite often physical – it’s mental.  Push yourself and make it all happen.

I wish the awesome and amazing Elise a great start in Sydney and I hope she picks up tons of personal training clients. She deserves it! With her skills and bravery I hope she makes $1,000,000 ASAP.

Love your work – thank you Elise for being so friendly and saying hello and have a great day / night awesome people!

The Crazy Persian (me) and LinkedIn Ninja Jillian Bullock. It’s an honour having her guest blog right here on ‘The Edward Files!’

As you know, at “The Edward Files” we have nothing but quality content (if you can assume my rants are “Content” lol).

I like to write about my own raw experiences, Marketing Insights and of course invite key Guest Bloggers / Experts to contribute.

This time we have a new colleague of mine, “LinkedIn Ninja” Jillian Bullock generously contribute with her knowledge. I do a lot of LinkedIn training and work myself – so you may think “Edward you are nuts promoting a competitor” on your blog.

To that I say “Peh” – Jillian is awesome and she is an Speciality Expert in the platform who knows her way around it better than I do.

I invited her to blog, as even though Facebook is certainly the “Flavour of the Month” – LinkedIn is making a huge comeback especially with it’s latest platform updates.

So without further ado – it’s time to appreciate Jillian’s knowledge here!

“Using Advanced LinkedIn tools at a Basic Level” – Guest Blog by Jillian Bullock

One of the smallest buttons on LinkedIn is also one of the most powerful. It’s the ‘Advanced’ button, located just to the right of the white rectangle at the top that usually says ‘Search for people, jobs, companies, and more…’

“That’s nice Jillian, but what can you do with it?” I hear you mumble under your breath. Alrightee then. The question is like asking a cheetah what to do with an antelope. You simply locate your target, initiate contact, and then go for the chase. Some you’ll win, some you’ll lose, but once in a while you’ll get a big fat one that makes all the effort worth it.

Now, just as a side note, I’ve never ever view LinkedIn or the people on it as prey, but locating and honing in on your target market is what the ‘Advanced Search’ section is all about. Plus I got a little giggle out of these images! (Thank you Rollin Safari for the image use!)

LinkedIn and Hunting PreyThe simplest way to get started here is to use the filters on the left hand side.

For example, you may have 300 first connections, but if you are wondering why there is a very large number at the top there saying 20,000 results, that’s because it is giving you your extended network. That network is your first connections, second connections those who they know, third connections those who your second connections and then people whom you share groups with.

A secret Ninja technique here is to be a member of a lot of strategically chosen groups and switch off the notifications via the Privacy and Settings so that you don’t get all their emails. This extends your network without the hassle of ALL the updates.

Next thing to do is think of your ideal client or referral partners. If you are unclear about this perhaps a session with Edward is in order :o).

For example, lets say you are a bookkeeper. Your ideal client would be small business owners and your ideal referral partners would be accountants. (There might be more than this but lets simplify for this example).

Using the filters on the left in the Advanced section is where you metaphorically use your precision catlike eye sight to narrow your search from 20,000 hopefuls to under 100. Start by typing ‘accountant’ into the ‘keywords’ space and see what results you get. If you did this exercise right next to someone else, you would both get different results. This is because it is searching your individual network of 20,000 not the entire 332 million worldwide database. It’s all about who you know.

Let’s say the results gave you 5,000 potential accountants. Now this is a big list and fairly useless if you have a free basic account, as LinkedIn will only let you see the top 100 anyway. So lets make that top 100 be highly targeted. Scroll down the page just a little and right above the the blue search button is the field ‘location’. Switch that from ‘Anywhere’ to ‘Located in or near’. This will then bring up all the countries to choose from, and of course we want an Australian Antelope don’t we. I mean accountant! A new box will then pop up prompting you for a postcode. Don’t be so specific here and put your exact postcode, your capital city will do well. Remember, this is an American platform so it doesn’t cater down to the every suburb of every country in every city of the world.

Now your results should be nice and narrow with maybe less than 100. If there is any chance you still have a big list you can always add something like ‘Managing Director’ into the ‘Title’ box.

So from here you have a couple of options, depending on your style. You can jump straight in and start connection and messaging these people and arrange appointments to visit their offices. Second option is to InMail (LinkedIn’s own email system) and introduce yourself. Maybe an even softer approach is more you and you’re rather ask the person you have in common to introduce you. (Just remember on a basic account you can only request 5 of these introductions per month). Another option is to go from a cheetah to a chicken and admire your list but do nothing. Not highly recommend though.

Just remember you can play with these filters for ages, once you get the general idea. And if by chance you are a Premium member even more filters are available. Have fun.

Edward’s Post Blog Commentary:

This is one of my favourite features for LinkedIn that I have recommended for many clients. I really like doing the search of “2nd Layer” connections in what I am doing.  That for me has been very valuable and I have got some great results from that type of thinking / approach. Love your work, thanks for the read – and drop Jillian a line if you need a hand!
