Business & Marketing Planning for an Awesome 2015: My Final Reflections as I get ready for tomorrow nights Webinar!

Some of my own biggest wins in business have almost always come as a result of strong planning. Getting ready for the webinar has only reminded me of that!

Some of my own biggest wins in business have almost always come as a result of strong planning. Getting ready for the webinar has only reminded me of that! (I am sure Martha Arifin woudl agree!)

Tonight (being Awesome Sunday) as I write this article has been a good one for me.  I have had a relaxing day with my new young family, hit the gym, got a massage (from the lovely Jude) on my poor tight Hamstrings and Calves and feeling great.

As I have been preparing for tomorrow (Monday) nights 7PM Webinar I have had some more key insights that have taken my own feelings and thoughts on “Business and Marketing Planning” to a deeper level.

I have been in business for about 3 years full time and I have really got a lot out of it.  Starting out for me was really hard (as I never came from a Business Family and had very little support at the start) and after about 2 years it was still hard but as the cliche goes “It gets a little easier each day”.

Tomorrow night is one of my favourite webinars which I run a few times a year, this one being “Building Your Awesome Profitable Business & Marketing Plan”.  Now is the time to get ready for next year and the format I am going through I have taught to thousands over the years (literally).

Whenever I prepare and get ready to teach – I am usually the first to learn some new things.  I have had 3 x Key Insights (or at least prominent reminders) as to why it’s a very smart move spending a bit of time to plan in ones business:

1) A Clear Anxious Free Direction: Going through business / life without a clear direction is usually not very Profitable and very stressful.  Planning takes that all away.

2) You Prepare for Issues in Advance: Having massive issues is part of life and when you KNOW THEY ARE COMING you can be well prepared for them.  I have found that issues are only a “Problem” when they sneak up on you.  If you got a weakness you can deal with it.

3) It’s Motivating and Inspiring: It’s a positive experience and I updated my own plan for 2015 about 2 – 3 weeks ago and it felt great! It gave me a sense of direction and put me mentally into the right place.

I trust these points help and if you are reading this blog before my Webinar I’d love to invite you to join me! It’s Monday Night, 7PM Sydney Time 1st December 2014.  To book in, just scroll down my Facebook Page and you shall find an invite!

Edward’s Tips on Getting Work Done when you are WORN OUT, TIRED AND FEELING EH!

The Awesome Ken O'Keefe from Ultimate Suspension is one amazing operator - a kind man who knows how to keep smiling during long projects and times of fatigue!

The Awesome Ken O’Keefe from Ultimate Suspension is one amazing operator – a kind man who knows how to keep smiling during long projects and times of fatigue!

I love my work and the great people I am connected to today.  At times people meet me (not so much anymore) and they think I am putting it all on. As they get to know me from month to month, they eventually figure it out “Wow, Edward’s put this on for years now – perhaps he must be the real thing!”

Because of my love and drive for what I do, usually about every three months I hit the wall.  YES, I have hit that point now and it’s usually a bit of a tough day or two for me. It started late yesterday and I was getting tired, a bit flat, slightly negative and having trouble keeping my eyes open.

It’s one of my quirks I think and I know quite a few people like this too.  They go for weeks, months very hard and they “Run of of Steam for a few days” much like I have now.   As I write this article I am with the Awesome Ken O’Keefe from the Ultimate Suspension and we were comparing notes on this fine topic.

I have known Ken for years and I have been very lucky to help him out with his work and even though I have been the one invoicing him, he has taught me some great lessons that just decades of experience shall teach.

As I have seen Ken go through some very tough times in business and life, what has inspired me about him has been his resolve to “Try and be positive” when you don’t feel like it naturally.  This has included seeing him coming back from say 17 hour flights from Dubai and being at work the same day, getting injuries and still doing physical work, carrying the stress and burdens of everyone relying on him and even more so – still smiling, networking and supporting people through the process.

I told him as I went in “Ken, I love what I am doing and boy I am worn out right now!”

He immediately laughed at me and said “I feel like that all the time!”.

Talking pure reality, there are times in business and life where you are JUST WORN OUT like I am now, negative thoughts may creep into your mind and you think how do I do it? As I am feeling that way right now, I thought what better time to capture my flatness and comment on it:

1) Eat a bit of comfort food.  Yes, I know it’s not the best long-term strategy but you can’t live on Wheatgrass Shots 24 / 7.

2) Remind yourself it’s temporary.  Keep it going and know it won’t last forever.

3) Think Happy Thoughts! It’s easy to get pulled down by negative / lame thinking at this time so stay out of it.

4) Do Urgent Work: Please get your urgent work done, however if there is optional development great to squeeze it out.

5) Have lots of Automation in your business: Of course before you wear out, make sure you have lots of automation.

6) Love your business. If you love your job you can push yourself.

7) Have a rest guy!

I trust these tips help and even writing them for the benefit of the thousands of awesome people like yourself that read my blog – I am even feeling better.

Love your work!

Keeping Up with Your Emails. You know what I am Talking About!

Even if I am out all day on the road consulting and networking, I will get out my Surface 3 Pro and clean my emails as best as I can! People love their problems solved fast and I don't like messages piling up!

Even if I am out all day on the road consulting and networking, I will get out my Surface 3 Pro and clean my emails as best as I can! People love their problems solved fast and I don’t like messages piling up!

One thing I have always prided myself on has been keeping up with my emails.

From my own Corporate Days, to my own Consulting Business – emails are one of those things that can work for you or really work against you.

Quite a few of my colleagues are with me on this one.  We know that when it comes to emails, you REALLY want to keep on top of them for a variety of reasons.  In my case (as agreeing with Matthew Craig on this one), the moment I exceed 20 unread emails in my Inbox I start getting very nervous and want to get onto it.  Some of the key reasons I think it’s critical to be on top of your emails are:

1) It keeps the stress down and stops you wondering!

2) You can respond to your clients quickly and deliver better service.

3) You can react to “Urgent” issues faster.

4) You don’t miss anything in the “Avalanche” of emails.

5) You keep your own projects and development moving.

6) Once you get on top of them it’s easy to stay on top.

7) It’s just good House-Keeping.

I know many great, brilliant business people out there that have literally hundreds (in some cases thousands) of unread emails.  When your Primary Email Account gets like this, it’s a massive problem in itself and invariably what happens in those many unread emails there are going to be situations of:

1) Client Orders that don’t get filled.

2) Client Questions that go unanswered.

3) Supplier questions that keep your projects sticking.

I have heard a few people here and there (who I think aren’t always telling the truth) give me the line “Oh Edward, I only check my emails every few days and people can wait”.  Hmm no! I don’t agree with this at all and I have plenty of clients & colleagues who are multi-millionaires who keep their emails in control.  One of the reasons why I think they are multi-millionaires is because they are the type of people who keep things in check and get things done quickly.

My advice and thinking? Emails are often the lifeblood of modern day communications and it’s like not answering your phone messages.  Be it clients, suppliers or people just asking questions / needing your help – put yourself in their position. If you have a problem you want it fixed now I bet?

The faster you respond to what people need, the easier your life becomes and the more they like you.

I trust that helps and yes, as I write this article my emails are up to date.  Touch wood it’s not too out of control by tomorrow morning.

My Love for TreeTop Adventure Park and Riding the 1km Longest Roller Coaster Zip Line IN THE WORLD!

It was a rocking honour today to ride the 1000m long TreeTop Crazy Rider with the Awesome Sarah Lockyer looking after me. Love her work!

It was a rocking honour today to ride the 1000m long TreeTop Crazy Rider with the Awesome Sarah Lockyer looking after me. Love her work!

If you know my insecure Persian Ego, you would surely know my love of doing things that are “The Best in the World” and coming up with original type of concepts.  Today, I was very lucky to get the Silver Service with the Awesome Sarah Lockyer of TreeTop Adventure Park.

I was very lucky to meet Sarah through the amazing Pip Scott-Allen and Sarah has been a fine delegate at our previous Sales & Marketing Workshops.  She gave me a massive referral to an awesome client in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and I said “Sarah – let me take you out to lunch”.

She countered my offer with a better offer, “No Ed! You come to Central Coast and I shall let you ride the “TreeTop Crazy Rider”, a 1km Rollercoaster Zip Line.  It is the largest zipline of it’s type in the world and check out some of the videos I have put below in the article.

In short, you get in a harness and are attached to literally a 1km line that is high up in the tree canopy that weaves through the forest. You are really high up and although I have little fear of heights it was quite daunting making that first step over the edge.

After the actual ride, I was able to have a great late lunch with Sarah and learn more about her work and what she does in helping manage the TreeTops across NSW.  She was quite an amazing character and gave reflection on how TreeTops has helped people change lives.  As an “Ex-Government” type of character who has done some extreme stuff which I take for granted (hasn’t everyone done Intelligence work and fought for their country?) I asked how so.

Sarah went onto explain how people have gone to TreeTops to conquer their phobias of heights once and for all!  She has told amazing stories of people who literally forced themselves to go against their fears.  I was enlightened by stories of people who would be in tears of joy who made themselves take the so called “Leap of Faith” over the edge to emerge transformed type of people.

This kind of blew me away.  My minor adrenaline rush was so enjoyable and people have used TreeTop Adventure Park to change their lives for the better by conquering “Fear of Heights” as a metaphor for everything else in their lives.

My lesson from today? Well Sarah is wonderful, TreeTop Adventure Park is Amazing, the “Crazy Rider” is worth it and if you have got a fear of heights, I know exactly how you can solve it.  Google “TreeTop Crazy Rider” now and take the first step to improving your life.

Thank you to Sarah Lockyer again and Canadian Pip of course! What a wonderful day…..

Overselling & Driving People Insane VERSUS Not asking for the Sale and Missing Out!

When is the right time to sell and ask for the order? You want to get the business sure, but you don't want to drive people nuts either. I remember Awesome Peter Oliver and I once had this discussion...

When is the right time to sell and ask for the order? You want to get the business sure, but you don’t want to drive people nuts either. I remember Awesome Peter Oliver and I once had this discussion…

Talking more “Selling” and not “Marketing” on this one, I have had this come up as a common issue for some of my clients this week.  They are busy running their business, selling their services and this question pops up:

“Edward, when is the right time for me to ask someone if they want to hire my services / buy my product?”

This is a simple question on the surface, but the answer can be quite complex.

As Sales is a “Complete Artform”, it’s not a simple scientific type of answer.  As what I have just said is a pretty lousy answer to this question, I think there are two extremes for consideration.

The “Overselling + Being Pushy Extreme”:

“Overselling + Being Pushy” is one dangerous extreme that people can fall into.  I am sure that you know what I am talking about here in that you just know “that person” who totally sucks and every time they see you they try and flog you something.  Talking more as a 4Networking Leader this is an issue I have to deal with every now and then.  We get people come into the network that I think aren’t very nice.  They come in, just hard sell everyone, get whatever they can, use pressure tactics and what happens is that they get a lot of complaints that go to me.

I am the one that ends up talking to them in many situations and even if they accept what I am saying (at times they don’t and they fight me – silly people!), the damage is already done.  Others see them as an annoying character and even though they may have got some sales, no one will talk to them anymore.

I can relate too; once upon a time at at Chamber Event this man found out I was a Marketing Consultant and 45 seconds into the conversation started hard selling me SEO & PPC services saying my current friends MindArc Digital Agency suck and have no idea.  As you can tell the conversation didn’t go more than 60 seconds and when I see him walking the streets, I tend to look away and hope he doesn’t approach me.

My thinking is that with overselling, *sure* you may get some sales – but it’s not sustainable and you have additional returns / refunds – people who buy before they are ready.

The “Underselling + Not Asking for the Order Extreme”:

This is the other extreme which can be a massive problem as well.  This was where I started out where I would spend time with people, give lots of free advice and at times have people go off and hire someone else over me.  From what I can tell this is where many fall into and it’s problem in itself.

I had one painful experience in which I had a massive falling out with someone.  I spent months with them at networking groups, gave them free tips, advice and help – but when we had that relationship I never asked if they wanted to hire me.  They took my free advice, hired someone else that did what I did.  Even though I question their integrity, hindsight says that if I asked for the business I probably would have got it.

Overall, this extreme is problematic in that you can waste lots of time, miss out on sales and also demoralize yourself as you work your butt off to educate someone as to why your services rock and they go off to hire someone else.

Edward the Crazy Persian’s Answer to this problem:

My own personal take on resolving this issue is being really mindful where people are at in terms of their need for your product and their trust for you.  The answer is a balance in between and they way I like to approach this is:

1) Understand their need for your product / service: Do they need it right now? Are they ready for it?

2) Your Connection with them: Meet, Like Know and Trust? When we connect I am ask them.

3) Wait for the right time: Don’t ask them when they are annoyed or complaining about having no money x x

4) Ask politely and give them an out: Don’t lock people in, I like asking “Just wondering if you are interested in getting started? If not all good, just wanted to put it out there”

Basically, I wait till I feel we have that connection, they need what I want and I very politely ask them.  This balance works for me and depending on what you do, you may lean more one way or the other.

My advice? This balance can be tricky at the start, but you should get a feel of the right time to ask for an order.  People often need a slight nudge to take the plunge and work with you.

Marketing Ideas that Confuse, Make Little Sense and are Probably too Creative!

The Super Creative Free Turkey with Every Fridge and Freezer sold promotion running at Bing Lee at the moment. Is it crazy and whacky enough to work?

The Super Creative Free Turkey with Every Fridge and Freezer sold promotion running at Bing Lee at the moment. Is it crazy and whacky enough to work?

There are some very intelligent and equally quite odd ideas out there.

As a dedication one of my dynamic business colleagues who shall remain nameless; if you speak one on one with this character he will get across key ideas to you about business.  They are usually quite pragmatic and intelligent in nature as he is great at taking complex situations and making them “Simple, “Real” and “Practical”.

This has been quite refreshing for me in the sense of many ideas I hear around town.  You probably like me has been hit with some “Strange Ideas” out there that defy common logic and would work with “Questionable Results”.

What inspired me to write this article started with me driving through the Northern Beaches of Sydney and seeing the massive White Goods and Electronics Retailer Bing Lee with a very odd promotion (pictured).

That is:

“You Get a Free Turkey with Every Freezer or Fridge you Buy from them”.

When I originally saw that I thought “Hmm, that’s really odd and I wonder if it’s working?”.  Several days later, one of my fine colleagues Giulio Ranieri made a joke about seeing the same thing on Facebook.  As people came into the Post, they all gave commentary on the “WTF” wavelength which was good – it meant I wasn’t going insane or anything like that.

I have heard many really strange ideas in business & marketing which have made no sense; with some of my recent favourites including:

– “Yes, Blogging doesn’t work at all and I don’t believe in it” (Coming from a Business Coach and another person who told me they are a Social Media Specialist).

– “Business Networking doesn’t work for my business at all” (Coming from many including one who had someone else in their exact industry, in the same networking groups who has a 6 Figure Business).

– “I don’t have any money to spend on my business / marketing” (Coming from someone who then went on a cruise).

My point being is that you get people at times doing some really bizarre things or perhaps coming with ideas which don’t really make a lot of sense.  Don’t get me wrong please, I am not saying don’t be creative, don’t try new things (as there are many times that “Crazy” things can work the treat in Small Business) – but there is a limit to this.

My advice and thinking on this one? As you come up with great Business, Sales & Marketing Ideas for your Small Business it’s really important to screen them and ask yourself “Will this work?”, “Will this idea stick?”, “Does it make any sense?” and questions like this.  I can promise it will help you screen some ideas that won’t stick and leave you with Marketing Strategies & Concepts that are more likely to hit and give you the results that you want.

Thank you for the read and also – if you one of the people that take up the Bing Lee “Get a Free Chook with a Freezer” promotion, please let me know.  That idea may be so crazy it may just work……

Networking Four Times a Week: Why it’s brilliant where did I get that from?

Aaron Bremner rocks and it was great spending time with him today and talking about 'Networking' and how I did it oringally. Four times a week I say starting out!

Aaron Bremner rocks and it was great spending time with him today and talking about ‘Networking’ and how I did it originally. Four times a week I say starting out!

Did I make up the statement “When starting out in business you should go networking four times a week?”

The short answer is “YES”, I did make it up.

However, I can assure you it wasn’t because I felt that “Four” was some magical number of cosmic tree-hugging spirituality.  It was what I once did to build my business and it was also what many of my original colleagues did to go from $0 to $100,000+ per year income.

The people I know that started up and say did once per week, most didn’t make it – but the heavy networkers seemed to do really well and many are at my side today some years later.

If you are reading this article and say starting out, or maybe a bit “Flat” business wise and need to grow again, may I suggest you consider “Business Networking” as one of your key Marketing Strategies.  For me and thousands I have known, it’s been brilliant in terms of taking people from being “Newbies” in the business community, to “Core” characters in just a few years who are known by hundreds and get near endless streams of quality referrals coming their way.

In terms of going back to the magic number of “Four Per Week”, I think if you are starting out this is a great number.  My reasoning being:

1) You need traction as quickly as possible so you want to network as much as you can.

2) Hitting 4 x Networking Events per week is quite a stretch for many and doing more may be a bit of a “Burn Out” type of move.

3) Say 15 x Per Meeting, you get to meet 60 x people per week – enough for someone to hire you.

4) Let’s say you get 1 x Coffee Chat / Face to Face Meeting per Networking Event – that is a total of 8 x meetings you have per week now.

5) Try it and test for yourself.

The point more being here is that you can say start out with my rule of “Four Networking Events” per week and as you get more clients / get more busy with paid work, you can always scale them back over time.  These days I do about 2 x Networking Events per week and that is pretty much all I can manage with my client and project workload.

My advice? If you are starting out / need a “Re-Birth” tons of Networking is a great move.  Not just from a “Client Acquisition” perspective, but also it’s great from building your power group and personal development.

Thank you for the read and thank you to the Awesome Aaron Bremner and Lewis O’Brien inspiring me today to write this article!

“If you want to get something done, go and ask a busy person!” – The Truth of This Statement!

The most wealthy people I know are great at getting stuff done and even moreso - they are incredibility busy and get out work faster than people who have more time. Interesting no?

The most wealthy people I know are great at getting stuff done and even moreso – they are incredibility busy and get out work faster than people who have more time. Interesting no?

Even though I am may have some critics, people know I get stuff done! Very early on in my Marketing Career, I knew that my own success won’t so much come from creative ideas, or “Being in the know” – it would ultimately come down to doing great quality work quickly and effectively.

I have heard this saying many times “If you want to get something done, go and ask a busy person”.  This is something I can totally relate too and what I find funny is that as I get busier, I seem to be able to get things done faster and more effectively.

Some of my great awesome colleagues are busy people without excuses.

They hit the gym, got massive businesses, families, people relying on them and if you ask them say a question, send them an email or ask for help they get back to you very quickly with the answers.

Conversely I know people who have all the time in the world, they have say way less clients than me, some don’t even have families and even the most basic email / request (where literally it would be 2 minutes to answer) can go days without response.

This brings me back to my original point and that funny almost “Counter-Intuitive Thinking” – why do busy people get stuff done?

My own personal thoughts on this one has come too:

1) They are busy because they get stuff done. Their clients love them, they get heaps of work and they are busy.

2) They have figured out a way to keep up with the workload and stay totally / sorta sane.

3) They respect time and the importance of it in terms of not messing their clients around / giving straight answers.

For me in this case, one of my own jobs / requirements is to complete 1 x Blog per day.  I am watching my lovely step-son play on the equipment and instead of staring at the wall, I am writing a blog saving me to do it tonight.

Of course I love my Microsoft Surface 3 Pro – it helps me get more stuff done, however before I had just this awesome technology, I was busy pumping out the work.  Also talking to some of my great friends and colleagues, they are on top of their workloads.

My advice and thinking? Regardless of the industry / type of coaching / consulting / or whatever you are doing, people love people that get the job done well and quickly. I get a steady stream of awesome referrals today and one reason why people love me is my ability to get stuff done quickly and well.

Work quickly and get a reputation as to be the most reliable and service oriented person in your game – if you do, I promise it will help keep that awesome profitable stream of clients coming your way.

Your Marketing Message: Why it’s Forever Wrong and you Need to Change IT ALL THE TIME!

Like all the chocolate houses cropping up in Sydney, they are forever coming up with new messages to entice customers. We in our own businesses are no different!

Like all the chocolate houses cropping up in Sydney, they are forever coming up with new messages to entice customers. We in our own businesses are no different!

Be it starting out, small businesses or even big companies – a never ending challenge we all have to deal with is our Marketing Message.

At the core level it may not change that much (e.g. if you are say a Chiropractor you help people with their health, backs, structure and the like) – however on a “More Detail” level one can find their message having to change quite often.

With my challenging title of “It’s Forever Wrong”, it’s more a statement in that you will never get it perfect.  Any top business (be it with the big boys in town) has to constantly forever tweak their message, optimize it and keep it current with what is going on out there.

I remember in the Marketing Departments I have run (both two bit with no staff to massive with Multi-Million Dollar budgets and university qualified professionals under me) – it’s a constant pressure we are under.

That is, you need to increase sales / visitations, write newsletters, write content, react to research and you are forever tweaking your message.

Talking to my passion and awesome Australian Small Businesses, we are no different to the large companies.  Let’s say we are pitching at networking events, writing Facebook Posts, Blogs on LinkedIn, email marketing or the like – even if you craft the “Best Message Ever” you just can’t keep saying the same thing over and over again.  It’s a bit like those old TV ads that wear out and overtime go from something that grabbed your attention to something that you just naturally filter out.

The other reality is as well is that the Market is forever changing.  You have new competitors, new noises made in the markets, events and basically society changing over time.

My advice and thinking? In your own business, you need to forever question, improve and always refine your Marketing Message.  If your message say is a bit “Stale” and it’s not really converting into sales anymore, it basically means it’s time to try something new.

Let’s say for example you are a Personal Trainer selling fitness to people.  For say the last 6 months you have gone on the “Lose Weight” angle and it’s not just working as well as it used too.  Let’s say everyone is saying that now and you need to come up with a different angle or message.

What about perhaps trying angles such as 1) Being more Healthy? 2) Having more energy? 3) Not getting sick as much? 4) Looking wonderful, 5) Having more strength?, 6) Want to fit into sexier clothes? etc

Whether these will work or not, I can’t say – BUT the point is that you keep trying different messages so you can really nail what’s working, what’s not and keep tweaking.

I trust those insights help and keep rotating your message – it works!

Marketing Yourself and the Awesome Importance of Giving Authentic Testimonials!

You got to spread the love! Khadine Aharon asked me for a video and written testimionial and I jumped too it. Sure, I am a nice guy and doing it also helps me!

You got to spread the love! Khadine Aharon asked me for a video and written testimonial and I jumped too it. Sure, I am a nice guy and doing it also helps me!

Today was an incredibly hot day in Sydney.  It did hit 44 degrees today as I was working out in the Sub-Tropical heat and I got a great request in today.  One of my friends and awesome supporters Khadine Aharon is working on her new website with the support of Awesome Martha Arifin.

As we were speaking today, Khadine asked for my help in giving her an authentic testimonial for some of the work she has done for me when I have been “Her Client”, give commentary on her work with 4Networking Members and also her on stage “Speech Craft” abilities.

Whenever I get testimonial requests in, the first thing I do is get them out as quickly as possible.  Be it old staff from my old Corporate Days asking for testimonials (I helped one the other week! She is an awesome anonymous woman who shall remain nameless), suppliers asking for help or the like – to me, it’s absolutely critical giving testimonials to others when they deserve them.

Why? Besides it’s great to be a nice person, whenever you give someone a testimonial you are promoting yourself! Let’s say it’s a video on their website, a comment where you shall appear in Google Searches or even when you get “Etched in Stone” on a Corporate Profile or printed document.

In the case of Khadine’s testimonial, I even put it on my Facebook Page as a Video in which the post has already been seen by over 500+ people.  It’s good for her, and good for me and everyone is happy. Also – even though I know she does like me, she perhaps may like me that “1%” more enticing her to refer someone to me!

My advice and thinking? Business and life is all give, give and a bit of take.  My business is totally rocking these days which I am eternally grateful for (especially as I have lived in my car at times in my life and been unemployed).  One key reason I think this is because of my own generosity to support others.  Build your team, back them, support them and you create awesome people on your side to help you get even more awesome results!

Many good things and many bad things have happened to me in life, especially over the past few years. I have learned that you never know what may be coming, so be ready to defend yourself and equally - be ready to grab opportunities when they come!

Many good things and many bad things have happened to me in life, especially over the past few years. I have learned that you never know what may be coming, so be ready to defend yourself and equally – be ready to grab opportunities when they come!

I was a very “lucky” man tonight (assuming of course if you believe in the so called illusion of “luck” – another conversation).

After finishing my evening workout I was very lucky to find a nice $50 on the street.  I looked around, made sure it was all good and took it with me.  I have decided to give it to the Salvation Army, so keep an eye on my upcoming blogs and I shall put up there “The Proof” of this act, so you know I haven’t spend it on Beer.

As I was speaking to my better half Jude at the time, it really inspired me immediately to right this article and got me reflecting onto just how life works at times.  I have found in business over the past few years, you really have to “Expect the Unexpected” as the cliche goes.

More times that I can count; I have had multiple clients send me the “Thank you Edward we are finished” email in the morning, only to pick up bigger and better clients that afternoon.  I have had very bad things happen to me in business, and JUST AWESOME AND AMAZING THINGS TOO!

What my driving point is being that “Surprises” are common in life and you get bad ones, great ones and everything else in between.  My own reflections on this has been that when you have “Great Events” happen in your business you are ready to deal with them and respond to them.

In my case, I have had weeks where I have picked up massive clients, been working late throughout the night to keep up with key deadlines and it has been “Tough” in a positive way.  One of the factors that really helps me keep up with at times very ambitious workloads has been my positive health.  That is, all the working out and good food – keeps my health ready so when the workload comes, “I am ready” to take it on and deliver.  When someone calls me a few days before saying “Edward, our speaker dropped us – can you come in and take over?” – I have presentations on hand (or even I can write something) to capitalize on the opportunity.

In short, what I am saying is that equally bad things happen to us in the world and great things happen too.  The $50 I picked up today, wasn’t just sitting on a “Well-Lit” pedestal.  It was quite hard to see and the fact I was out at the gym then, away, healthy and focused – gave me the ability to see it and pick it up.

And I am happy about that! $50 to charity and I shall post Proof of this event I can tell you – that will no doubt feed at least 10 x Homeless People dinner one night.

My advice? Be ready, be open and be focused in life; not just on guard for when negative things happen, BUT being ready to act on Awesome Opportunities that may come your way.

Thanks for the read and love your work!

To Get an Office or Not? My love for Servcorp and the 3rd Option…

Even though my sandbox is more Sales & Marketing, I get asked quite often, “Edward, do you think I need an office?”

It’s quite a simple question, yet the answer is very complex when it comes to Awesome Small Business Owners like us.  My first response to this question is another question “What do you want to do?”

The reality is that if you say get your own office, it can cost you thousands starting out.  Let’s say you get something for $2500 per month.  That’s great and all, however it can be a massive dent to your account and I always ask this challenging question:

“What if you work from home and put $2500 extra per month into your Sales & Marketing Campaign?”

With that question, people generally get my perspective and either vito getting an office (or at the very least they delay it till their businesses are much larger and they can afford it).

Talking personally too, I figured this out quite early and worked from home.  I generally meet clients in Cafes, at their work premises and when I hold Workshops, I just hire out the Awesome Novotel Sydney Olympic Park – problem solved! Being more Sales & Marketing, I can get away without having an office however I do get that some business types just do need an office for the potentially sensitive nature of their work.

The relatively new “3rd Option” which I have many clients take is the path of going a “Serviced Office”.  These are basically business hubs where you work in a beautiful atmosphere with full services.  You are basically hiring an office “Part-Time” and you can use it for a range of situations from just getting out of the house, just having a “Real Physical Address” or even getting a part-time office that can work well for you.  Let’s say you need an office for a meeting, sensitive work – or you may even have a “Board Meeting” of some form.

Talking to Servcorp, the are an Australian Success Story who have just great serviced offices.  I just spent an evening at a Business Networking Event (on the house) hosted by the awesome Hayley Mackintosh at Servcorp North Ryde. They are very professional offices (better than many offices of top Corporates in town), you have great staff, top facilities and they are built to impress.

My advice and thinking? If you do need an office, may I suggest you strongly consider Servcorp in your searches.  I personally haven’t found the need (yet) to have an office, BUT IF I DID – Servcorp would be the answer to my problems.  Check it out and I think you may like it!

Thank you for the read and love your work!
