Dealing with Drugs All Day: Insights of the Australian Drug Detection Agency

Outside the Australia Drug Detection Agency in Alexandria (Sydney) and their display of various testing devices. Amazing operation!

Outside the Australia Drug Detection Agency in Alexandria (Sydney) and their display of various testing devices. Amazing operation!

Some months ago I was busy helping out our team at our 4Networking Liverpool event in the South West of Sydney. I was on the front desk and a group of what I thought Australian Federal Police walked up the steps (who were undercover).  I thought immediately “Uh Oh” – I am going to be recruited or they are coming to give us a shake down.

When I said hello, one of them very nicely said “Hi, my name is Bryce with the Drug Detection Agency”.  It was quite a funny experience and in addition to the relief of not being interviewed by my old friends the AFP, we instantly nicknamed them “The DEA” (which standards for “The Drug Enforcement Agency” – basically the Drug Law Enforcement arm in the United States).

Since the time we have got to know the amazing team, Bryce, Steve Reynolds, Bobby, Rebecca and more – whenever one of them are at a networking event when they get up in a 40 second round and say “We do Drug Detection” there is usually a pause and you can feel the “Uh-Oh” of the room.

In being very lucky to work with them as well, it has felt like being at home for me again.  Being surrounded by Ex-Law Enforcement has got me thinking back to my hey day and they run an amazing operation.  Basically they have testing vans and they visit workplaces and help employers test their staff to keep everyone safe.  Urine, Hair Testing and Saliva are some common tests and when you see behind the scenes they are purely amazing.

All their testing of course must be very precise as it can be used in forensic / legal matters and not too different to the Police Force, all the testing is carried out with strict process.

As I get to know more about this fine operation, I find it fascinating some of the stories that I hear.  They have tested some workplaces with at least 20% of the workforce testing positive to some type of illegal drug. It basically means that 1 out of 5 are high on something or have been recently.  Pushing a “Pen” so to speak is one thing, but I can only think of many cases where you have people driving vehicles or heavy machinery that may be under the influence of something they probably shouldn’t be.  I am glad they are helping inform employers of what is going on and cleaning up the workplace!

Amazing work, a unique business and they are backed up by some serious people with very impressive backgrounds and check out their website right here – very compelling!

Thank you from Edward Zia! Marketing Mentor who is very drug free!

The Gentle Psychologist Joel Curtis is our Guest Blogger in this fine article on ‘Developing a Business Mindset’. Raw, Real and Very Accurate Advice here!

Our not so humble blog anymore has the Psychologist / Thought Leader Joel Curtis back in his next article “Developing a Business Mindset”.

Joel is one top operator and I have found his insights not only compelling, but very credible and based on sound logic and reality.  I found this guest blog article direct, raw, hard-hitting and I 100% agree with it.  If you want to learn more, Google this genius of an operator!

Developing an Intelligent Business Mindset by Joel Curtis:

Repeat after me. “Everything that isn’t happening in my business, is my fault.”

It probably doesn’t feel that good when you say it and developing the *right* mindset in business can be a real challenge to master.

As our businesses are dependent on ourselves, we need to have our own thinking on track, which leads to on track behaviours which can help us achieve powerful business results.

This type of *right* business mindset requires us as business owners to take responsibility for everything in our business. Be it things that are going well, going not so well, or not going at all.  This can be daunting in itself and in order for this type of thinking to work, you cannot take things personally. Business isn’t personal, it’s not your “child” and the moment you see things that way – it can rob you of your power to made decisive and well thought out decisions.

Decision making, making difficult calls and decisive decisions can be the difference between failure and success.  It’s all up to you to make it happen and if you focus on the wrong things at the wrong time, or even make no decision – it can make situations worse.

It’s not about making 100% perfect decisions all the time, as that is not going to happen in a world as complex as ours with often many variables outside of our control.  When we let go of the past, move on from our previous mistakes and focus on the present and the future – we can create new amazing results.

The business mindset is one that is progressive, well thought out and makes decisive moves to achieve powerful results.

The Importance of Hanging out with Awesome, Intelligent and Generous Characters!

The Legal Eagle Kimberly Buttriss. Intelligent, Focus, Generous and a pleasure to work with. Awesome things tend to happen when one hangs out more with awesome people!

The Legal Eagle Kimberly Buttriss. Intelligent, Focused, Generous and a pleasure to work with. Awesome things tend to happen when one hangs out more with awesome people!

I have heard over and over again that often the results you have in the life (be it health, funding or the like) is the average of the five people who are mentally the closest to you.  I tend to agree with this statement more and more as life passes in that over time I feel like I am getting more successful and surprise, surprise I am spending time with a much higher calibre of person that I say would several years ago.

To be clear on this point too, I don’t mean in some superficial way in that they are loaded or anything.  Although they are often wealthier, I am not just judging people by their respective ‘power’ or ‘funding’ available to them.

My assessment of them is based on all areas of life and I am very blessed to have great new friends that have higher standards in general.  Be it health, friendliness, caring – it’s not all dollars in the bank that makes one person better than another (although a good chunk of society tend to think that way!).

What inspired me to write this article was some post reflection of meeting the sharp operator Kimberly Buttriss.  She is an Associate in the Family Law Area of Marsdens Law Group and I have been totally lucky to originally meet her through the 4Networking Australia business community.  It was a pleasure meeting her today to catch up, talk shop, public speaking, events and the like.  After meeting with her, I left on a positive high and had a day setup for success.

This got me thinking about how my life used to play out originally.  I remember when my self-esteem was not there, I would always find myself just surrounded by the wrong people. Even if they had money, they still sucked totally in that they either made their money through questionable means, or they used it as means to dominate others to fill their own insecurities.

Overtime many of us have improved our own self-worth and what I find powerful about doing that is that you automatically hang out with a better quality of person.  This makes sense actually, because if you have an improved sense of self-worth, you are probably nicer to yourself and other people – so why on earth wouldn’t they want to hang out with you?

Going back to the sharp Kimberly, I am very lucky to be able to work alongside her and other characters of her calibre in the Sydney Business Community. Why? They are not only avatars of success in their respective fields, but they are generous characters who often mirror key traits I find very aspirational and wishing to develop in myself.

My advice and learnings from this rocking day? Listen to your mother, only hang out with great people and watch your life play out the way you want it!

Hope this helps trigger some inspiration (check out my Awesome Marketing Vault here of course!) and happy days / nights awesome friends!

Research, Innovation and Improvement: My Story on How it was CRITICAL to My Success!

Research, Innovation, Ideas, Technology Upgrades and New Content has been Vital to my Success! I highly recommend it for everyone as a great strategy for success!

Research, Innovation, Ideas, Technology Upgrades and New Content has been Vital to my Success! I highly recommend it for everyone as a great strategy for success!

My stage in business has been a massive time for improvement, reflection and consolidation for me.  Cleaning up old debt, building auto-responders, processes and basically things which I wish I could have done 2 years ago (but couldn’t as I was trying to survive).  Now looking back as a “Success”, I can see the cycles of business play out in a very informative and compelling manner.

One topic of interest lately to me has been all the people I have seen come and go.  I once left this Private Coaching College in Melbourne (which was good, but also created a lot of issues – another story for another time!) there were plenty of people who finished with me.  I went in the Sales & Marketing direction and they were all more in the Mindset direction.

I remember many would laugh at me and pick on me in terms of my generous pricing, no contracts and great conditions for clients and the like.  As the years passed, almost all of them are gone now and what was interesting was meeting people ahead of me that are no longer in business.

I have known probably at least 8 x Business Consultants and people that were in business when I started out and they were miles ahead of me. I remember even having “Vista-Print” $50 Business Cards once and they would be armed with maximum thickness and quality.  One “Meanie Porky Balding Guy Business Coach” even picked on my credentials at a Networking Event when I started out. That was so upsetting at the time and I am not sure if he is even active anymore.

I made lots of mistakes, but one thing I realized that helped my success beyond many others was my research and technology drive. I would always be upgrading my business cards, working on websites, driving my Facebook Community, upgrading my Corporate Profiles, purchasing Branded Coffee Cups and with the little money I had after my expenses I would put them back into the business to make it stronger and stronger.

What was fascinating was that after about 2 – 3 years of this approach, I kind of realized that all my little cumulative upgrades left me way stronger than everyone else.  People I started against who were one miles ahead of me looked very questionable to what I had.  Many are not even around anymore and I put it down to my “Research / Innovation” drive as being a key reason why I won in business.

The lesson for me of course is to not stop! (Which I can promise you I am not).  We have seen all big companies like Nokia, Qantas, Kodak, The Book stores all once be the subject of admiration to be companies on the edge or not in business anymore.

My advice upon reflection of all this? My own survival has been on the back of continual innovation and improvements and you can see this in the technology companies.  Apple (not so much anymore but under Jobs for sure), Samsung, Google, Microsoft are always putting out new technology to really grab people, keep market share and keep people inspired.

A great thing to do in ones own business I think! And of course if you love to see some of my own innovation, then I would love to soft sell (thank you!) my Online Sales & Marketing Course the “Awesome Marketing Vault”.  You can get instant access by clicking right here friends!

The Real World of Business: Standing Your Ground and Self-Respect!

The Awesome Phillip Raish and Edward Zia (me) wearing suits at a Business Chamber dinner some time back. Phillip is a master of Operations and Process – a great man to bounce ideas off!

I had a great meeting with my friend, colleague and one of my trusted suppliers today Phillip Raish. He runs a Promotional, Printing and Signage Business and is one of my earliest ongoing Personal Mentoring Clients to this day.

Overtime, he has ironically mentored me in many ways in particular when it comes to Operations and Business Processes (which he is brilliant at).

Like anyone in business who has been going for a while, we have all been stung by “Shonky” people previously.  Be it BAD people that don’t pay their bills, complain about nothing and business partners who just take from us and cause us lots of harm.

In reflecting back on my own business, one thing I have been guilty of and learned my lesson in is the importance of “Standing Your Ground” and ensuring that fairness is a two way street.  Most people are great and I work with some wonderful people today, however the BAD / Scumbags have caused me a bit of distress.

The lesson I have learned is exactly that, “Standing Your Ground” at all times.  That is, if someone is trying to take advantage of you – it’s really important you pull them up immediately and rectify the situation.

I have found in business, the BAD people can take advantage of us in some obvious and not so obvious ways, e.g. Not paying your bills, taking your referrals and not giving back, using you for free consulting and say just being “Mean” to you because someone said something about you to them (and they listen to gossip too much).

My Advice? My lessons are quite simple, SCREW THEM AND MOVE ON! I use to let these bad people get to me, however over time I have come to understand that it’s their issues that they are just unfairly playing out on yourself.

Always treat others with utmost respect in business and that gives you the right to be treated with respect.  If someone doesn’t, they are just bad and move on once and for all.

Speaking to the positive too, treat your friends amazing well and reward people who are awesome to you with more awesomeness.

And of course speaking about “Awesome”, if you like the way I think then I think you will love my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault”.  Click right here for instant access!

“The Waitress Treatment Test” and Knowing “Who” you are Really Dealing With!

One of the Greatest Civil Rights Campaigners of all times who has always greatly inspired me. I think judging someone by what they do for a living is as bad as judging someone by the colour of their skin!

One of the Greatest Civil Rights Campaigners of all times who has always greatly inspired me. I think judging someone by what they do for a living is as bad as judging someone by the colour of their skin!

Probably some years ago, I heard a great saying that at the time I dismissed for something cute – only to find it very true and accurate:

“You can judge people’s true nature by how they treat a waitress”.

Excuse the sexism in this saying as this point of course isn’t about gender, it’s more about how people treat what they consider different “Classes” in society.  If you know a bit about my history, even though my natural accent may be that of an Melbourne Eastern-Suburb Affluent – I have been homeless several times, eaten quite a few meals in Soup Kitchens in my time and have had myself brought down to earth rather hard after once “Making it” so to speak as a Corporate.

I really appreciate those lessons in that if I ever had any sense of arrogance, that certainly took it out of me and replaced it with proper humility.  As my life went on and I learned some of these lessons, this lesson kept coming up for me over and over again.

These days across Sydney, I am quite a known figure in a lot of the Business Networking spaces.  Be it people like me or not, they know who I am and treat me from that type of perspective.  I remember when I was a “Nobody” so to speak and the people who were nice to me then.  People like Grant Dempsey, Edward Wright, Martha Arifin, Matt Craig and many more – they were nice to me at the bottom.

I know some other quite undesirables that were quite mean to me when I was on the bottom and today, they are my “Best Pals” which often makes me ill.  That is, they care little for who I am and are just nice to me because they either “Have to” or like “Edward is powerful, so I will suck up to him”.  These are the Scumbags / BAD people I want to pick on this article x x

These days I eat a lot of meals out of the home (at least 60% of them) and I always make it a point to be well mannered to those making my coffee and especially waitresses.  Speaking to the BAD people, I have seen a few of these in action when it comes to dealing with Waiters, Waitresses and say Shop Assistants.  Proving that old saying I learned some years ago, they are mean to people they consider “Weaker” than themselves and they kiss butt of people who they think are “Stronger” than themselves.  They will be fakely your best friend, only to boss around some hard working man / woman serving them the best of their ability.  Anyone who pushes someone around weaker than them is a little stinky bully in my book and I treat them as such!

I can imagine you are reading this article thinking “Yes Edward! I know plenty of people like that”.  I think most people aren’t and are quite good – but you get this large chunk of society who are.  They think this way, very power based behavior from people that have a complete lack of moral substance and ethics.

My advice? Talking to the positive, in business I have been screwed over many times and this is a “Great Test” I use all the time. I watch how people treat others, how they speak of others and in particular how they treat say Waiters and Assistants.  If they do it well, chances are I can trust them – if not, they are probably someone who will end up trying to rip me or one of my friends off.

So regardless of what people do, I think:

“Do not judge a man by the contents of his wallet, but by the content of his character” – obviously I am trying to quote someone famous and awesome here.

And speaking of awesome too, if you like my rants – err I mean, my quality articles then you will love my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault” – available for Instant Access by clicking here!

Happy Days and Nights Friends and speak to you all soon! Edward Zia – Marketing Mentor and Small Business Lover!

Moving from “Barely Surviving the Day” to “Automated Systems and Processes”: Way more Fun!

I remember starting out in business was like an episode of Star Trek. I would wake up, get through a whacky day and barely survive to the next. Now it's systems, process and automation. Way more fun!

I remember starting out in business was like an episode of Star Trek. I would wake up, get through a whacky day and barely survive to the next. Now it’s systems, process and automation. Way more fun!

Tonight has been a massive landmark for me in my business and life.  Crossing 3,000 likes on my Facebook page has got me reflecting on the awesome (yet painful at times) journey I have been on.

Its been quite a few years now and I have survived many unwinnable business battles, launched many groups, made plenty of mistakes and also had many massive wins for my clients which makes me successful in turn.

Like many that have been running a Small Business for a few years, about say 6 – 12 months ago I crossed that point where for me alone it is all too much and way too hard to manage. In once sense that is liberating and awesome.  In a shorter-term sense, it can be “Positively Stressful” in that you are succeeding and your every waking moment is directed to supporting what you do and love.

My heavy focus lately has been that of “Consolidation” and cleaning up my business with systems, standards and structure.  It may not sound like the most exciting topic ever of business and it’s been hard work! This has included say dealing with bad debt, working with my strategic partners, building new documentation, growing my Facebook Community, updating websites, getting money in, email auto-responders and the like.

The challenge for me has been dealing with the day to day of my business and putting enough time into systems.  Hard work, but I have found that things are “Slowly Getting Better”.  That is, it takes time to create a system, but once I do the business becomes more stable, solid and workable.

It makes my business less about me “Somehow getting through the day” and making it more about “It’s a Process and there are things to be done”.  In reflecting on this statement, I remember a few years ago starting out in business is just that.  I would wake up and getting through every day would be like an episode of say Star Trek: The Original Series.

That is, I would have no idea what would happen, how to get through it and during my day I would encounter whacky things and I would somehow barely survive the day.  Every day was like another Star Trek episode, it starts great, things go bad and I somehow barely survive but it’s one amazing adventure.

In thinking about this on a deeper level, it’s been fun and the day comes where for you to expand or say deliver more with less hours – you need systems, process and automation.  It’s not the easiest thing to setup, but once you do it slightly frees you up every day.

A great example of one of my systems is this blog you are reading, how I promote it to thousands over Facebook and also my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault”.  You can get instant access right here and hope that demonstrates my logic (and okay, I am soft selling to you as well – you got me!).

Thank you for the read awesome people and have a great day or night worldwide friends! Edward Zia – Marketing Mentor.

Brushing Your Teeth: The Importance of Consistent Marketing

Brushing Your Teeth is that Critical Type of Ritual in Business. I wish this Stripey Horse listened to this advice!

Brushing Your Teeth is that Critical Type of Ritual in Business. I wish this Stripey Horse listened to this advice!

10:36PM.  I have been up since 5AM and I am worn out. Still with the smile of success, but the fatigue of a man who has weathered a harsh desert living on a high-carb / low-protein diet.

One of my rules that has been going for at least a good 7 months has been to blog every day.  The reason for this from a Marketing viewpoint has been to be producing regular content, build my presence on Google, have something to go out on Facebook and constantly market myself in a regular manner.

Mick Grogan who I was lucky to meet at Squeeze Wollongong tonight is man who works “At the Steel Mill” and he is a very big fellow who obviously hits the weights quite often.  In his line of work, it takes a lot of discipline and consistency to pull it off and they way he phrased it was in the context of “Brushing Your Teeth”.  That is, we don’t question Brushing Our Teeth, but when it comes to say exercise, marketing or whatever the case – we can often question it and be anything from consistent!

The fallout of this behaviour is that we don’t end up getting the financial results we want (which obviously sucks quite a lot!).  What I have found interesting for me personally is that as I have been blogging so successfully and consistently so far is that it takes no discipline to do.   It’s just a daily habit I do now with zest and focus.  That is, I know blogging is great for my business as much as brushing my teeth is for long-term dental hygiene and keeping my teeth.

My advice and great learning from “Big Rigs Mick” from the Steel Mill? If there is something you need to get done and it’s important but you are lacking the “Motivation” – just force yourself to do it for as long as you can. Eventually it will just become as easy as “Brushing Your Teeth” which means you don’t have to push yourself as hard.

I loved this advice and it has got me thinking – and speaking a great advice, if you love success you will love my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault”.  Download it right here, right now and you will love it!

Thank you and happy day / nights from Edward Zia!

The Importance of Looking the Part: My Reflections on my “Make Over”

Fit, Healthy, Stylish and Got Me Thinking - It was a pleasure meeting Donna Pace the Personal Branding Specalist today and reflecting on my own make-over!

Fit, Healthy, Stylish and Got Me Thinking – It was a pleasure meeting Donna Pace the Personal Branding Specialist today and reflecting on my own make-over!

Yes you got me.  A few years ago, I certainly looked like a bit of a slob.  I had a very small make over, I wore unique but not exactly aspirational type of clothing and I was quite overweight!

After lots of reasonable pestering, I got on top of myself, hit the gym and got plenty of new awesome threads.  It was very good timing too, I was lucky to have a great breakfast meeting with the Personal Branding Expert Donna Pace.  She is this petite yet highly powerful and stylish entrepreneur that has the tenacity of a lion, yet the stylish subtleness of a Ragdoll Pedigree Cat.

We spoke about many topics including trendy items such as Product Mixes, Autoresponders, My Loathing for Aweber, My love for Mailchimp and many great marketing topics.  As I was quite impressed by her stylish ability, I keep feeling “Wow, I am so glad I got a make-over, otherwise I would have looked like a bogan around her”.

In further reflection on my make-over, I was considering how it’s totally transformed my life for the better.  It all started with the gym and replacing my wardrobe over time.  I went from more boring Corporate Wear to Floral Shirts, Trendy Shirts and basically anything you would expect an insecure, err – I mean 100% secure Persian man to wear to grab attention, err – I mean look the part of entrepreneurial credibility.

Linking it back to more Sales & Marketing and talking dollars and cents (in full agreement with Donna’s Logic) it has been amazing for my business doing that.  Until I started looking the part now and it helping me get more clients, public speaking gigs and feeling better – I can really understand the Fashion / Image / Business Link.  Sure, one can argue I may sound a bit superficial, but you know I am right.  If you are selling say high value services that are quite intangible then all of these factors have absolutely critical relevance.

My advice from my own reflections on the topic? Be the Part.  Look the Part.  If you don’t or am fat like I was and it’s a problem for you, don’t stress! Just get yourself a Gym Membership, cut those carbs, hire someone like Donna to help you look the part and get your Sales on track with a strong image.

And speaking of getting your Sales on track, if you love the way I think – make sure you check out my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault”.  Just click right here to get yourself Instant Access to this “Fashionable Masterpiece!” (as I like to think that is what it is).

Joel Curtis our Awesome Guest Blogger: “Self-Leadership: The Goal of Every Business Owner”

Joel Curtis is the only man I think who can pull off pure Obi-Wan Kenobi. It has been alleged that if I dressed up as a Jedi, I would more resemble Annakin Skywalker. Great.

We are very lucky today to have the genius, brilliant, intelligent, wise and of course very handsome Joel Curtis as our Guest Blogger today.  If you have seen his work before, he is a Performance Psychologist who I have gladly promoted across town and referred people too.  Every so often with me chasing him, I can squeeze another brilliant “Article” out of him to put through my blog “The Edward Files”.

So without further adieu, lets see his raw intelligence play out:

Self- leadership: The Goal of Every Business Owner (by Joel Curtis):

It’s funny when you start your own business how little you actually understand about the world.  Especially if you have been an employee and decide to walk off so you can “Do it yourself better” we can often get rude awakenings in this regard.

In the world of “Self-Employment”, we can find very quickly that we are alone, 100% responsible for our own choices and it can be a scary moment for many people (for many of the most in their lives).  This can be overwhelming for many especially early days in business.

The first thing I say is to face this fear head-on.  It won’t go away if you ignore it, and the sooner you face it – the sooner it loses it’s power and you can feel that sense of well deserved inner peace return.  The sooner you get out of “Blame your Boss mode” to also “Blame Yourself Mode” it makes you even stronger, more effective and brilliant at what you do.

This is “Self-Leadership” and is an important responsiblity of any business owner.  The more you take charge, realize you create everything in your business and the “Buck Stops and Starts with you” it creates a more positive and energizing experience.

It’s good to talk about these thinks! #talk2joel

Automated Marketing 101: The Awesome Power of Email Marketing and Autoresponders

Email Marketing and Autoresponders have been great Automated Marketing Strategies that have been around for a few years. Few use it though to it's potential!

Email Marketing and Autoresponders have been great Automated Marketing Strategies that have been around for a few years. Few use it though to it’s potential!

As I have been in business for 3 coming 4 years now, I have entered that place where you are established, have a steady stream of awesome work coming in and having fun productive days.

Whether you are selling a Tangible Product or an Intangible Service, I find that we can quickly enter that place where we can be “Too Busy to Market”.  The issue isn’t working harder or smarter – as you have already done that and any improvements you can make in this area will be incremental at absolute best.  That is, if you are getting up at 5AM and getting to bed at 11PM, what else are you going to do? Your efficiency improvements get marginal at best.

This is where “Automated Marketing” kicks in.  Be it you are doing $5 Facebook Boosted Posts (which I love) to get you say 1500 Views for your post or even creating an online product to sell your fine services.

All weekend, I have upgraded and setup my “Email Marketing Autoresponder”.  What this means that as people sign up to my Email Database they get an automated chain of high value emails directing them to various content, information (and of course inviting them to purchase my Awesome Marketing Vault).

What is quite impressive about this type of technology is that you can get as many sign-ups as you like and you don’t have to do any extra work.  Once the process is setup, it’s working for you 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

In concept what it is:

– An Email Capture Form on your Website (that is prominent).

– You offer a Free Giveaway to make it worthwhile.

– Give people awesome value, say with them getting an instant email and follow ups 1, 4, 9 and 14 days from sign up date.

– You also offer your own services and products.

This of course is it’s own area of Marketing and conceptually I love it.  I have always used Autoresponders in one form or another, but as my business has grown I have given it one massive upgrade.  Feel free to visit my site too – sign up and check it out.

In addition too, if you love how I think and what you see – may I encourage you to check out my Online Sales & Marketing Educational Course “The Awesome Marketing Vault”.  You can get instant access right here and I hope it helps!
