tedx-edward-ziaYesterday was quite a massive win for us all with TEDx Northern Sydney Institute. It’s a very high reward, yet high stakes game in that if you do a great job – you will improve your brand, get lots of exposure and just look great.

Equally speaking too; if you have an unrecoverable problem it can almost mean the end of your license.

As we know it’s a high stakes game, we worked our butts off and collectively nailed it. It’s the day after for me and I was reflecting about the top speakers on the day that really show cased the event.

I was a Mentor on the day ensuring the speakers win and everything comes together. It did!

As I reflect on the play, I have really started considering the top 7 x traits of our heroic speakers. These include:

1. Strength: They open strong and are loaded with power. You would never mess with them and you know they are pros.

2. Speed: You don’t ever think they are too slow or check your watch. They keep hitting you with ideas and thinking.

3. Substance: Even if they are say telling you a personal story, there is a logic and flow. You know they aren’t just making stuff up – it’s convincing.

4. Not reading their slides! You know when someone reads their slides too much and it looks bad. The great ones don’t do that.

5. Speak to the room: I watched the actual speeches not in the room, but from the ‘Command Centre’ and even on video, it’s critical they cover the whole room.

6. Activism: Just telling you what you want to hear doesn’t work; the ones that ‘rile’ you up are just great.

7. Leave you with something to do next: You leave with a sense of purpose when they close.

My advice and thinking friends? Whenever you speak face to face, on a Live Webinar or on camera – really make sure you are making the ‘right’ impact on your audience. The top speakers earn the top dollars! I like to think I am one of them and it’s an ongoing / endless process of learning and skill development.

Some TED & TEDx speakers are just fantastic! Watch some of their speeches on YouTube. You will see some that hit you right in between the eyes. Ask yourself why and work out how to make yourself better.

Love your work, thanks for the read and stay awesome!
