Email Marketing is a very powerful Low Cost Strategy that is great for Small Business Owners & Entrepreneurs. There are probably thousands of ways of doing it too and I trust these tips help point you in the right direction!

Email Marketing and the use of really good “Newsletters” for me has been an awesome improvement to my overall business.  I used to email say once a month with very “mediocre” results and about 3 months ago I moved a weekly program.  Each Friday at 11AM I sent out a very simple, no-fluff newsletter giving free content and a VERY LIGHT SELL to some of my Premium Products.

For me the newsletter has really helped me look after clients better, get new clients (as usually I get a few replies to each newsletter of someone asking how I can help them) and also fill my Webinars.

Today, I think that many people know how to say open a “Mailchimp” account and make something that is pretty, but that this is a far cry of what is required for it to be effective.  I have had some shocking experiences in that I met someone say 6 months ago and I get an email saying “Do you want to buy this? Or can I sell you that? Or I have a special on some stupid product you don’t want?”

I am quite serious on that one and to this day, I haven’t heard from someone for 6 months and they are trying to sell me something I don’t want. Have a guess what my normal reaction is to that? Where is my Opt-Out button.

For your Email Marketing to be effective, it really does vary for all business types and users.  Some do great with monthly and for a business like mine, less information “More Frequently” did the trick. I trust these tips help you out in making Email Marketing Work for your Business!

1) Know the Objective of Your Email: Getting more Clients is an obvious objective, however you got to be realistic and know you just can sell people every time you send them something.  Your objective may be to “Inform, Educate and Lightly-Sell” to help you get more clients.  Great to think this through.

2) Select your Platform & Do the Database Import well: I personally use and highly recommend Mailchimp for a range of reasons.  They have great Premium Support, the Analytics are great, it’s Free / Very Cost Effective and you can create beautifully emails quickly. Make sure you setup your data, import it all correctly and setting up Forms on your Website with Autoresponders rock!

3) Work out a Frequency: I usually encourage people to start with “Monthly” emails and “Warm Up” their list.  You want people who don’t like you to Opt-Out quickly, so you have left with high value awesome people.  You may then test / ramp it up based on business objectives. I wouldn’t do less than monthly however, people just forget.

4) Work out how you are going to give Value: People want Tips, Insights and Ideas to help solve their problems. Just “News” about what you are doing is “Okay” but you want to do better than that.  I quite like the Gallery Format (which I use).  I give 2 x Tips / Interesting Articles & Insights and then have a light sell.  You may in yours for example have a “What’s On”, a cool Tip and then invite them to contact you.

5) Have really good graphics: Make your email visually appealing / pretty to look at.  You don’t want to come across as an Amateur.  Nobody likes that!

6) Opt-Outs will Happen! I get say about 0.5% Opt-Out per Newsletter send.  I also get about 1 – 3 x New Leads per email send too! It’s the old “Rejection is part of Success” adage.

7) Watch the Data and Keep Improving it: Every time I write my next newsletter, I tweak and improve it based on the new ideas I have.  It always helps!

I trust this helps and happy Email Marketing! The first I would do is some research on a platform and if you are already setup and want to really improve it – then maybe think about things strategically and make some improvements.

Love your work and feel free to drop me a line if you need a hand.
