From empty to full in just 20 minutes - one great lesson in that timing is everything!

From empty to full in just 20 minutes – one great lesson in that timing is everything!

Today being the Sunday just 1 week before Christmas taught me yet another business lesson today. My lovely mother-in-law was visiting today for a pre-Christmas lunch and I had to do a supermarket visit.

Desperate times called for desperate measures; so a visit to the awesome Costco Wholesale was in order. If you know what a visit to Costco is like, it is not a small feat. You will spend a minimum of $200 (I know people who have spent $6,000+ in a Costco visit) and you will be offered so many awesome products in multiple quantities.

I think it’s one of the best concepts ever and it looks like at least half of Sydney agrees with me. Want to go there on the weekend? Dream on. It makes the main terminal at Sydney Airport look quiet and I knew I had to visit today.

It was decided that I must get up early and go there on opening. I did exactly that and it was pretty good. Car park was 1/3 full, only a few people to wait before me in line (no different to say Woolworths) and it was great.

As it was about my turn, I glanced behind me and there was at least 10+ people behind me! When I hit the carpark it was totally full with people waiting for spots. All this happened in about 45 minutes. I got in at just the right time and got out at just the right time; and it reminded me as to how business and marketing works.

It’s not just what we do in business, but timing plays a critical role.

A great example is high value business networking as a marketing strategy. The events are only on at certain places at certain times and if you miss then or get in late; that’s it! You miss out on a fantastic opportunity where you could have met someone who loved you and would have hired you for thousands of dollars.

If you say rock up late to one of those events; did you potentially miss that new high value client that you would have met if you were there 10 minutes earlier? I have personally had countless situations where if I was just a few minutes out, I would have not picked up a massive client.

My lessons and learnings over the years?

Timing is critical and can be as important as the strategy itself. For example, saying that I am into ‘Business Networking’ is one thing but you actually have to go to events consistently for this strategy to work. Also, let’s say I miss getting out that email newsletter, that’s it! That moment is lost forever in time.

Talking to the positive, we must pounce on opportunities when they come and realise the value of time. Once you miss a moment that is seriously it. The trick is being an opportunist and taking the shot wherever you can. Improving my thinking in this area has changed my life on many levels and I love it.

The earlier we are, the more targets we hit and the more people we meet all helps us get more high value profitable clients. Get in before everyone else, beat the crowd and it’s true that: “The early bird gets the worm”.

Thanks for the read, love your work and thank you Costco – besides the great seafood, you have taught me some great lessons in business and life.

Stay awesome!
