With thanks to Yve Lavine for a wonderful photo – it made me reflect on how wonderful Sydney has been to me. I love this town!

I used to be a drifter. Going from place to place living out of my car. Many find that hard to believe in that these days when they hear my accent and see what I do.

What interestingly got me homeless was making some bad decisions continuously. Bad relationship choices combined with poor financial choices all accumulated. The upside of all this is that these days I AM GREAT WITH MONEY, in knowing what the opposite got me.

Sydney is an incredible city and I was telling this story to a friend yesterday. I was originally from Melbourne, spent some time working across Australia and was in Hobart with some great high-end Marketing roles.

The life down there wasn’t for me and when it all came to a head; I sold and gave away lots of my possessions. I had clothing, some books and my trusty Ford Laser when I started to figure out then next part of my life.

I originally considered going to Dubai, but found that Global Financial Crisis (at the time) totally wrecked the place.

I even considered joining the Government again, but I thought I am cool. Then I decided to go find a new city to live in and maybe start a business one day. Melbourne is a great city, but a lot of my friends moved on so nothing for me there. Adelaide wasn’t for me. I am not a Perth fan. Queensland is a beautiful place, but way too hot for me (in originating from colder climates).

Sydney however always appealed to me. Whenever I visited Sydney, the city always challenged me in one way or another. I always thought “I wonder if I could make it in this city?”.

When I first arrived in Sydney and to this day; I just found it an incredible place for entrepreneurship. People are really kind, diverse, friendly and I came in to the place pretty much on the bottom of society – as a drifter!

People in this wonderful city judge you on the content of your heart and character which is wonderful. I got some great lower jobs to pay my bills, started my business and started working away.

As it slowly grew, I made new and wonderful friends and the like, I speak to wonderful people daily who are starting out in their own business journeys. Many from overseas, interstate, basically non-natives of Sydney.

Sydney has wonderful weather, kind people, great opportunities, plenty of top networking experiences (NSW Business Chamber is wonderful) and I can tell you this:

  • If a homeless drifter like me can make it here, SO CAN ANYONE!

My advice and thinking? Whether you are in Sydney or not, the content of your heart and character is everything. The right people respect hard work, helping people and those with a genuine drive to help others.

It takes lots of great days with plenty of hard and intelligent work. The wins are very small (at least my ones are), but they slowly accumulate to wonderful success over time.

I love Sydney! A great city and thank you to everyone for making it just wonderful for me!

Thanks for the read, smash that like and share + love your work.
