With my hoarse throat, rumbling stomach from too much finger food (yet a smile from a great evening) I am back at home tonight from the Awesome Parramatta Chamber “After 5” event.

If you aren’t from Sydney, Parramatta is basically a major “Second City” of Sydney with the Business Chamber here being one of the best in town renowned for it’s friendliness, size, connections and accepting “Can-Do” culture.

I have been Business Networking for some years now and although I don’t do as much as I used too – it’s a fun, pleasant way of getting great contacts, making friends, getting clients and the like (including finding one’s significant other too!).  It’s always formed one of my most favourite Marketing Strategies as a means of getting high value clients and building great referral partners.

I get asked all the time to teach awesome people business networking and often help my clients learn strategies as to best how to make it work for them from a commercial / client acquisition viewpoint. What I almost always say is that it’s not so much the size of the Networking Event you go too.

Regardless of there being 1000, 100 or even 10 people – it always comes down to quality of people in the room. I have been to events of 50 people who hate me, hate themselves and would be the worst clients on earth.  Conversely and for the better – I have been to events of 6 x people and connected with someone awesome where we went on to do amazing things (be it they hire me or we become referral partners).

What I often say to people is this; let’s say you to go a networking event.  You may meet 20 x people.  5 x of them don’t like you.  5 x of them love you. Of say the 5 x that love you, you may follow up the next day and book some coffee chats with say 3 x of them. Let’s say 1 x of them turns into a client and nice! To me, the trick of any networking is event is doing that. Meet tons of people, identify the right ones that is a Win / Win in you following up with them, book a meeting and go for it!

You only need to meet that “Special Person” per event to make Business Networking totally worthwhile for you.

My advice and thinking? Don’t worry about the quantity of a room – always the quality. Find that awesome character and just connect with them!
